MY STORY // VEGEBITEZ

Vegebitez was born out of the harsh reality that I had nowhere to go out and eat and actually
feel safe. You may be asking, “Why didn’t you feel safe?” And thus my story begins….

Growing up I was never well. I was constantly sick, always in pain; never able to enjoy my food
without the constant fear of the inevitable that would happen from one bite. This is probably
TMI, but the washroom and I were best friends, along with my bed that no longer served it’s
warm comfy purpose after a long day at school to comfort me but rather a jail sentence; never
able to leave because it “hurt to much to move”. You truly feel trapped when your life becomes
predictable. Knowing that in order to survive, to eat, that it would cost you big time. So costly
that I had to drop out of high school halfway through grade 10 because of the pain. It left me
paralyzed, unable to breath, literally, unable to move and bed-bound for an entire year. That
was a pain that still scares me to this day. I wouldn’t wish that amount of suffering upon
anyone. To those who are suffering, I’m sorry you are going through this… It gets better.

Eating is such a social thing. You converse, you laugh, you share and create grand experiences.
Food can remind you of those amazing times, bring back memories, creating lasting
impressions. It is truly an emotional roller coaster when you cannot create these wonderful
memories with family and friends. You become the outsider. The “friend’ that no one truly
knows how to handle because they don’t know what you are going through, won’t fully
understand and rather hang out with someone who is essentially worth their time. It’s almost a,
“what can I get from you out of this relationship”, and when those “needs” aren’t meant, you
are tossed away like the food you can no longer eat because of the tragedy that comes along
with consumption.
After years of suffering and the unknown, I finally met the woman who would change my life
forever, a Naturopathic Doctor. She actually believed me after countless Western Medicine
Doctors had brushed me off. The final conclusion…. FOOD ALLERGIES! To say I quit those foods
cold turkey was an understatement. Then my slow recovery began.

It took me 5 years before I ever stepped foot into a restaurant due to the fear of cross-
contamination and potential allergens lurking in food that people were non the wiser of. But
alas, I wanted to try because I was tired of not being able to go out and socialize…. biggest
mistake. I get the menu, made for Celiacs, picked a meal and when it finally arrived I was
cautious, scared… those who’ve been down this road can only understand. You fear that all this
recovery can be reversed with one bite. I took the bite and I instantly knew… That “celiac-friendly”

meal was actually just a regular run of the of the mill glutinous-allergen filled dish. No
accommodations, no care, no taking my requests or me seriously. In that moment, as I was
rushing to the hospital because of the pain that erupted, I knew I had to be the change I wanted
to see in the world.

Now here we are today, Vegebitez! I wanted to create something that truly represented me;
something different, something unique. Bursting flavours, interesting combinations and all
around delicious gourmet vegan grub. This ain’t your mamas rabbit food people! We strive to
bring you the most scrumptious 100% Vegan & Gluten Free food that is also Predominately
Organic. I want Meat-Eaters and Vegans alike to come and enjoy the food and realize that
“Vegan” is more than just Salads (mind you our salads are pretty darn delicious too!). I want
people to go out and be adventurous and try something new, to have a better understanding of
those who have food allergies, those who choose to live cruelty free and those who want to
send the message that eating allergen and animal free isn´t limiting!
